Turned chair
Turned wooden chair known as the 'justice's' chair.
This chair has always been known as the ‘Justice’s Chair’ and comes from Tregib, a mansion house in the Tywi valley. It is an imposing chair, and most likely once belonged to Morgan ap Harry of Tregib who was appointed a justice of the peace in 1581 and later Sherieff of Carmartheshire in 1602. The Courts of Great Sessions, or high court were held twice a year in each circuit and had a resident Justice who presided over the Session. Justices of the Peace met four times a year at the Quarter Sessions, when they dealt with not only breaches of the peace but matters such as local defence, repairs of highways and administration of the Poor Law. The chief official of the shire was the sheriff. It represents the new adminstrative posts that were created for the Welsh ruling classes by the Laws in Wales Acts of 1536 and 1543.
