Roman gravestone (T. Flavius Candidus)

Gravestone of Titus Flavius Candidus.

Flavius Candidus was a legionary soldier of the ordinary ranks (miles). His home town was Ulpia Traiana, now Xanten on the Rhine in Germany.

D(is) M(anibus) / T(itus) Flavius Candi/dus Ulp(ia) Traiana / m(iles) leg(ionis) II Aug(ustae) / Sti(pendiorum) VII an(norum) XXVII / fra(ter) c(uravit)

‘To the spirits of the departed; Titus Flavius Candidus, from Ulpia Traiana, solider of the Second Augustan Legion, of 7 years’ service, aged 27; his brother had this set up.’

Site Name: Little Bulmore Farm, Bulmore

Collection Method: surface find
Date: 19th century

Notes: probably found on the site of the Roman cemetery at Bulmore. The stone was rediscovered in 1939 at Woodville, a house on the farm.
