Sampler
COARSE LINEN CANVAS, embroidered with coloured silks in cross, eyelet, stem, satin, four-sided and back stitches, The upper half has the letters of the alphabet, twice in capitals and once in small letters, and numerals to 10, in nine horizontal rows, separated by straight and zig-zag stripes. Some of the rows are completed with heart, flower and geometric designs. Below is the verse:
"In all misfortunes this Advant'ge lies They make us humble and they make us wise Let's bear it calmly tho' a grievous woe And still adore the hand that gives the blow And he that can acquire such virtue gains An ample Recompense for all his pains"
At the bottom is the inscription: "Ann witford wrought This sampler in the / Seventh year of her Age " followed by the letters of the alphabet in capitals in two horizontal rows. There is a border of a floral wavy stem. Late 18th century. From Nant- y-glo, Monmouthshire.
