Roman samian bowl
The beads bordering the central moulding are large and well spcaed. There is a leaf scroll in the lower zone with stylized ivy leaves and bifid leaf tendril bindings. The ivy leaf may be the same as that on a sherd from Fishbourne. One of the parallels quoted there, a piece from Hofheim illustrated by Knorr, in fact has a somewhat larger, and perhaps earlier, version of the leaf, Knorr 1919, Taf. 91, F is similar in size, but slightly narrower. The date given for the Fishbourne sherd is very early (AD40-55). It is difficult to judge the fabric of our piece, but a somewhat later date seems preferable.
