M.V. SIGSILVER, launch card

Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.

Launch card for the M.V. SIGSILVER "In commemoration of christening for Messr. Silver Line Limited, March, 1967. Sigsilver". Includes postcard of a ship portrait of the ship.

Captain Roy Jenkins of Aber-porth (1929-2013), was her first master. She was a somewhat problematic ship as she suffered terribly from vibration in her superstructure. On her maiden voyage her entire radar, aerials, etc. on top of the bridge structure fell off into the sea, and Capt. Jenkins had to complete the voyage with compass, sextant, chronometer and chart, 19th century-style!

The Sigsilver was ordered by the Norwegian shipping giant Jebsens, but sold ‘on the stocks’ to Silver Line of London; at the time of her delivery to Silver Line, she was the largest bulk carrier under the UK flag at nearly 95,000 deadweight tons. She was an occasional visitor to Port Talbot after the opening of the new ore terminal there in 1970. Sold to London-Greek interests in 1973 and re-named Iron Sirius, she was scrapped at Shanghai in 1986.
