A Bacchante Diverting the Attention of a Tiger with her Cymbals
In 1813 Gibson was working for a Liverpool marble mason, but was already fascinated by the ‘simple actions and pure forms’ of Greek art. Here one of wild women companions of Dionysus, the god of wine, distracts an unlikely looking tiger with her cymbals.
