Roman samian bowl, decorated
Ovolo with three-pronged tongue-terminal, turned to R. Panel decoration, demarcated by wavy lines with rosettes at the junctions. (1) Bestiarius (D.634) to L. attacking a Lion to R. Underneath the lion are grass tufts. (2) In small panel, a sitting hare. (3) Beneath the bestiarius a bird. (4) Satyr to L. (cf.D.253, 352) above an altar. (5) Bestiarius to R. (D.595). Beneath the bestiarius, grass tufts. (6) A large three-bladed straight wreath forms a lower border to the design. Fair glaze ; rather coarse workmanship.
