Cushion cover
Cushion cover made of sacking and linen. The sacking has been hand-embroidered with symmetrical design featuring fruit and leaves, using wool thread. Embroidered by Gwyneth Raisin of Church Village during the Second World War.
Sacking is tabby weave, using two S-twist yarns as one pick. The natural/undyed linen used on the reverse is also tabby woven. The edges are joined by machine stitches using a maroon thread on the front and a pale maroon thread on the reverse. One side of the cover is open for insertion of the cushion. There is no fastening. Both front an back fabrics have selvages along the opening, but the selvage of the sacking has been stitched down in a single turn-back. Along the opening, the sacking fabric extends beyond the linen backing by approximately 1.5-2cm. For the embroidery, two S-twist threads have been used as one. The outline, carried out using brown thread, is done in chain stitch and the fruit and leaves using a four-sided stitch. The darker of the two pinky-red woollen threads has a higher twist compared to the others.
