The Arosa, seen here in the Roath Dock, c. 1948, was built at Three Rivers near Quebec in 1922 for service on the Great Lakes. She is easily identified as a Great Lakes vessel by her bridge located right forward on the forecastle. Many of these vessels found themselves in trans-Atlantic convoys during the Second World War, and by the date of this photograph she was owned by Panamanian shipowners, operating far away from the waters for which she was originally built. S.S. AROSA (2047gt nominally, as WELLANDOC). Built 1922 as an iron ore carrier, EDWARD L.STRONG at Three Rivers, Quebec for the Canadian Great Lakes service, and owned by Hall & Co. Ownership later transferred to Playfair* (was she renamed PLAYFAIR (?). 1926 – Sold to Canada Steamship Lines and renamed SHEBROOKE (or SHERBROOKE ?) under which name she served throughout the Second World War. 1946 – Sold to ** , Panama, and renamed AROSA. 1951 – Sold to **, Italy, and renamed IDA O. Her bridge was relocated from the foc' sle to amidships, along with some other cosmetic changes, sometime in the 1950s (giving her a nominal 2047 gross tonnage). 1952 – Sold to N.M.Patterson, Fort William, and renamed WELLANDOC. 1955(?) – Sold to the Federal Navigation Co. She was broken up around 1963(?).
