A.G. Edwards, Archbishop of Wales (1848-1937)
Born in Merioneth, Alfred George Edwards was the first Archbishop of Wales. He championed the Established (Anglican) Church and opposed the Welsh Church Bill (1914) which led to the disestablishment of the Church of England in Wales and the establishment of the "Church in Wales". However, he was credited with great diplomacy, negotiating amendments to the bill, and was appointed head of the new Church in 1920.
