Late Iron Age copper alloy tankard handle

Fragment of a tankard handle, only on circular attachemnt and a small section of the handle survive. The attachment plate is decorated with a symmetrical openwork La Tene design. The handle strap is moulded into two wide grooves with a central ridge that expands near its terminal to accomodate a circle of red enamel inlay.

Bronze tankard handle with red glass inset, 1-100 CE. Found near Coelbren Roman fort.

Find Information

Site Name: Coelbren, Cadoxton-juxta Neath

Collection Method: metal detector

Notes: Found outside the walls of the Roman fort at Coelbren, Neath Port Talbot. Found within the scheduled area of this ancient monument. Dr Rick Turner at Cadw was informed of this discovery and was content for no further legal action to be taken. As the finder was not legally entitiled to detect on this area, the artefact was dontaed by finder and landowner to the National Museum rather than purchased.
