The Development of a Tertiary Coal Concession in Kalimantan (Borneo), article
William Arthur, Lewis (Mr W. Arthur Lewis O.B.E., began work in a naked light coal mine at fourteen. For ten years he laboured as a coal hewer, packer and timberman until part time study took him to university and a BSc degree. In 1950 he bacame a Management Trainee and worked his way up to the post of Colliery Manager at Six Bells Colliery, Abertillery. After 38 years service he retired from British Coal. In 1975 he was appointed Senior Lecturer in the Mining and Mine Surveying Department of the Polytechnic of Wales. He again retired and was active with the Rotary and British Executive Service Overseas (services to which he received an OBE in 1987). As a Rotarian, he was made a Paul Harris Fellow in 1989.)
