Walking stick
Walking stick made of birch with teak handle, Machynlleth, 1894.
Everyday objects become works of art in the hands of a wood carver. Craftspeople can see designs in the way wood has grown, and use their carving skills to bring them to life. In the past, carved sticks were given to people as a token of appreciation. Some sticks reflect particular interests or a particular activity. Stickmaking was a hobby craft rather than a means of earning a living.
wooden stick with crop handle; handle has brass end-piece fixed by 2 nails; stem has relief carvings of fish, eels etc., painted red, brown, black etc.; lower section has carving of leaves and dark-painted band; brass ferrule.
