Bronze Age amber bead

Bronze Age amber bead

Glain ambr o’r Oes Efydd

Circular bead with slightly wedge-shaped cross that suggests it may originally have been part of graduated necklace of several other beads. It was found just 1m away from the star-shaped faience bead (92.46H/321) within the Late Bronze Age rampart at The Breiddin hillfort. It is possible that they were originally from the same necklace, perhaps from an Early Bronze Age burial that was disturbed when the hillfort was constructed in the 10-9th centuries BCE. However, amber beads are also used and buried into the Late Bronze Age (1150-800 BCE) and so a later date remains a possibility.

Glain cylchog gyda chroes tebyg i siâp lletem sy’n awgrymu efallai y bu’n rhan o fwclis a oedd yn cynnwys nifer o leiniau eraill o feintiau gwahanol yn wreiddiol. Daethpwyd o hyd iddo dim ond 1m i ffwrdd o’r glain faience siâp seren (92.46H/321) yn y rhagfur o’r Oes Efydd Ddiweddar ym mryngaer Breiddin. Mae’n bosibl eu bod yn dod o’r un mwclis yn wreiddiol, efallai o laddedigaeth o’r Oes Efydd Gynnar y tarfwyd arni pan adeiladwyd y fryngaer yn y 10-9fed ganrifoedd CC. Fodd bynnag, roedd gleiniau ambr hefyd yn cael eu defnyddio a’u claddu yn yr Oes Efydd Ddiweddar (1150-800 CC) ac felly mae dyddiad hwyrach yn bosibl.

Amber has unusual qualities which may have seemed magical. It is golden and translucent, light and warm to the touch and will produce static electricity when it is rubbed! Amber necklaces are not commonly found with burials in Wales but evidence from England suggests they may have been buried in graves throughout the Early Bronze Age.

Mae gan ambr nodweddion anarferol a allai fod wedi ymddangos yn hudol. Mae’n euraid ac yn dryloyw, yn ysgafn ac yn gynnes i gyffwrdd ag ef, a bydd yn cynhyrchu trydan statig pan gaiff ei rwbio! Nid yw’n gyffredin dod o hyd i fwclis ambr mewn claddedigaethau yng Nghymru, ond mae tystiolaeth o Loegr yn awgrymu y gallent fod wedi cael eu claddu mewn beddau ar hyd yr Oes Efydd Gynnar.
