Edward, Prince of Wales (1894-1972)
JAGGER, Charles (1885-1934)
Trained as a metal engraver, Jagger won a scholarship to the Royal College in 1907. Seriously wounded during the First World War, his war memorials have a unique power and sympathy. Edward, Prince of Wales (1894-1972) deeply admired his work. This informal portrait delicately balances realism with idealisation. It was commissioned by Lord Esher and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1923. Sir William Goscombe John was a friend of Jagger and purchased this cast from his memorial exhibition in 1935.
