Note
Pencilled note by I[orwerth] C. P[eate] on 'Cart Axles' - "The Mongomeryshire folk to whom I spoke were almost shoked at the idea of oaken axles. They regarded oak as very unsuitable for the purpose and pointed out that ash was generally used and is still often found. It has the advantage of being tough as well as of wearing evenly".
