Child's cape
Black wool cape, trimmed with crêpe, with one metal hook and eye fastener at front of neck. Worn by Mrs Ella Thomas for her uncle's funeral in 1891. She was five years old at the time. The cape is made from a 22cm wide rectangle of black wool twill fabric, trimmed with a 5.5cm wide strip of loose-weave/semi-transparent black silk crêpe fabric. The crêpe fabric is applied over an interlining of brown cellulosic tabby woven fabric. The trim extends along sides and lower edge, as well as on the inside of the upper edge down to the point where the fabric is gathered with a double row of stitches, 3cm below the upper edge. The gathering stitches are reinforced on the inside with a 1cm wide strip of the black wool satin fabric which is hand-stitched over the gathered area. The inside of the cape is lined with wool satin, with brown cotton wefts (singles yarn, Z-twist). Smaller sections, on either side of the centre front opening, are lined with the same wool twill fabric as the front of the cape.
