150 Years of Canning, photograph

Photograph of 'the world's oldest tin', dated 1823, which was recovered from the stores of HMS Fury four years after the ship had been crushed by ice in the Arctic in 1825. It was kept unopened until December 1958, when the British Food Manufacturers Research Association reported that 'it was found to contain meat'. (Description from Ingot Magazine, June 1960, page 31).
