Ice-cream pail and liner
Ice cream pail and liner, cover missing, Nantgarw porcelain, wheel-thrown, white body with good clear translucency and lustrous glaze, slight grey tinge. The pail tub-shaped, standing on three depressed bun feet, flat base and straight sides, two curved rectangular handles with spreading grooved terminals; painted on one side with an exotic pheasant, yellow head, blue-black wings and red body, standing on a rock wreathed in flowers, a landscape with a tree behind, and on the other side with a yellow and black crow-like bird, similarly standing on a rock and flowers, a smaller blue, pink and green bird behind, the upper part decorated with an elaborate gilt border comprising four rayed C-scrolls, two closing the bird compositions and two over the handles containing a spray of polychrome flowers, linked by large gilt scallops amid tulip sprays and ribbons, deckel gilding to lip. The liner with recessed base, sides tapering slightly, everted rim, patch of crackle to the glaze, the interior painted with a tit-like bird, blue-black head and wings, pink breast perched on a sapling amid purple flowers, a tree behind, gilt band to rim.
