Roman copper alloy tankard handle
Small tankard handle of heavy cast bronze. The handle was attached to the body of a wooden stave built vessel by means of two stout rectangular lugs, each pierced with a circular hole. The lugs project backwards behind two heavy discs from the front of which the grip of the handle springs. The discs are linked by a substantial rib of bronze designed to lie against the body of the vessel. The grip of the handle is lentoid in form and decorated with moulded and indented lines following its overall shape.
