Lower Palaeolithic stone handaxe
Large handaxe with pointed tip and pointed thick base. There is some of the original pebble surface on one face and the other has been carefully shaped and is flat with two hinge fractures near the base.
Stone handaxes were used by the Neanderthals in Pontnewydd Cave to butcher animals for joints of meat.
