Smith, Sampson (Longton business founded c 1846. Smith died in 1878 but the firm continued in production under various names until 1963. Figure making continued until at least 1926 (see Gordon Pugh pp12-13))
Figure of William Gladstone, white earthenware with a blue tinted crackle glaze, standing on an egg shaped base inscribed in gilt script. Figure in contemporary dress of underglaze black shoes, white trousers fastened under the instep, underglaze black coat with top button fastened, white waistcoat outlined in gilt, white cravat, pink hands and face, grey hair, gilt outlining on clothing, standing on an green and brown ground with right leg slightly forward, left hand on hip, right hand holding paper and resting on grey pillar. Low wall behind.
