Helmet

Traffic police helmet from the 1960s, round, close fitting shape with small brim. Cork base with a black faux leather cover made in 4 sections, machine sewn with black cotton thread. 2 holes in each side for ventilation, covered with black rubber eyelets (one is missing), black faux leather strap/hat band around the brim with a loop fastened around it at the back with a popper. Inside there is a forehead band made from red cotton twill with a strip of foam underneath for padding (likely to be polyurethane) the edge of the band has a red cotton yarn threaded through to adjust the fit. There is another layer of black foam around the edge, this is a little stiff and it probably a different material. There is a faux black leather section which extends down from the back of the helmet to protect the neck and ears. The crown and extension are lined with red cotton twill. The brim is lined with cotton with a green waterproof coating. The edge of the brim is bound with a thin strip of black faux leather and machine sewn. There are 2 straps attached to the ear flaps to fasten the helmet, the one on the left side is long and has a padded, velvet cover for comfort and a white metal buckle at the end, the one on the right is short and has both sides of a white metal press-stud fixed to the outer side, the shorter end of the strap threads through the buckle on the longer strap and the press-stud closes to fasten
