Roman shale bowl
The base of a bowl made from grey shale. It is a low pedestal base, what survives of the sides are not steep.
The large base fragment was found with an additional chip that slots perfectly onto one edge. The chip is of a darker colour to the rest.
It was recovered from the Late Roman field ditches in SMR 15. Excavations at Caerleon in the extramural settlement produced fragments of similar vessels dated to the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD (Evan and Metcalf 1992).
