Smock
Round smock-frock of unbleached linen, embroidered with linen thread. Worn by Evan Griffiths, a farmer in the Dolgellau area who fought at the Battle of Waterloo. Said to have been made by his daughter.
Four mother-of-pearl button fastening at back and front. Square collar and double shoulder flaps. Two flapped and buttoned pockets. The smocking is done in cable, wave, outline and honeycomb stitches. The embroidery design consists of linear foliage in the boxes, done in chain stitch. Alos on the shoulder flaps in chain and twisted chain with a design of heart, flowers and coils, with French knots. The collar has a wavy line of chain stitch and is edged with herringbone stitching.
