Sampler
Small embroidered sampler (referred to as a 'mini protest banner') made at a workshop led by Sarah Corbett, founder of the Craftivist Collective. The workshop, held at St Fagans: National History Museum in June 2012, was organised to coincide with Refugee Week and the Refugee House exhibition.
Printed green cotton, with an overall pattern of pink, yellow and white circles and flowers. There are two metal eyelets (one in each top corner) to enable the 'banner' to be displayed in a public space. A piece of white block weave canvas has been applied onto the cotton. The canvas has been embroidered with the inscription 'Mae ceiswyr lloches yn chwilio am fangre diogel' [asylum seekers are looking for a safe space]'. The Craftivist Collective label has been stitched diagonally over the canvas, bottom the right.
A rectangle of Aida fabric (175mm x 80mm) is hand-stitched to a fine, printed, tabby-woven cotton fabric with blanket stitches using three strands of dark green embroidery thread. Approx. half-way down the middle of the lower edge, the stitches move up by one row due to the white fabric having been cut unevently. Its edges are unfinished. On it is a text in Welsh, embroidered in the same colour green embroidery thread. Two metal eyelets (Ø 11mm) have been inserted on the upper corners of the printed cotton fabric. The printed cotton fabric has a pattern of white, pink and yellow flowers and white circles against a background of light green with small white dots. Its edges are trimmed with pinking shears to prevent fraying. A white synthetic ribbon (width 12mm) has been stitched diagonally across the lower proper left quarter of the 'sampler' using dark green embroidery thread. It also has pinked edges. It has a woven weft-faced inscription in purple.
