Tynewydd Colliery inundation rescued, photograph
Survivors of the Tynewydd Disaster 1877. On the 11 of July 1877 water broke into the Tynewydd Colliery, Porth, from the old workings of the adjacent Cymmer Pit. Fourteen men were trapped, five were lost and nine survived. The five shown were rescued after many days of tunnelling to reach them. The rescued miners are (left to right) :- David Jenkins, George Jenkins, 15-year old David Hughes, Moses Powell and John Thomas.
