Castel Gandolfo, dancing Tyrolean shepherds by Lake Albano
COROT, Jean-Baptiste Camille (1796-1875)
Corot's delicate brushwork creates a shimmering effect of evening light, typical of his open air paintings. This work would have been completed from memory, however. The artist's last visit to north Italy was nearly fifteen years before, in 1843. Castel Gandolfo was a popular subject among historic landscape artists and shows Corot's ability to reconcile modern naturalism with academic ideals.
Work was part of the AFA tour (2009-2010): From Turner to Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Davies Collection, National Museum Wales
