Glamorganshire Canal barge RICHARD WILLIAMS, model
Model of a Glamorganshire Canal barge. Model made by Richard Williams, who was worked as butty on Glamorganshire Canal Co. boats captained by William Thatcher. He left the canal in 1939.
Glamorganshire Canal Barge No. 503, RICHARD WILLIAMS. This model of a typical South Wales canal barge was made by the late Richard Williams of Rhydyfelin, who was a bargee on the Glamorganshire Canal. Due to the relatively short length of most canals in south Wales, the bargees did not live on board as a rule, returning instead each night to their canalside homes. In contrast, with their counterparts on the national canal network, the south Wales barges were not ornately decorated.
