Roman lead lamp holder

Roman lead lamp holder with handle, with a central oval recessed chamber leading into a pinched nozzle with two small knops rising at the top at the point where it meets the chamber.

Oil lamps were filled with vegetable/olive oil or sometimes animal fat as a fuel and had a wick for lighting. They would have got hot and messy if carried around, so lamp holders were used to protect the person carrying it. There is evidence that these objects were used to hold lamps, possibly as a wall attachment or that they may have been used as lamps themselves.
