Film features the Dinorwic Slate Quarry which when the Royal visit of the Duke and Duchess of York took place in July 1899 employed 3,000 men. Film explores the craftsmen of the quarry following the process of quarrymen quarrying the slate in the galleries, then transportation through incline into the dressing rooms where slate was split and dressed. Film also looks at the quarry workshops which made patterns and produced and maintained machinery for the quarry and follows this process. Film ends with paying methods for the quarrymen who worked a 5½ day week from 7am till 5pm. The film's commentary is provided by the workmen themselves with historical overview of the quarry which closed in 1969 and became the Welsh Slate Museum.
