Hot set
Hot set. Cut hot metal from the forge. It was used in conjunction with a heavy hammer. Because the hot metal absorbed most of the shock as the hammer hit the top of the set, they had a solid wooden shafts. Cold sets were shorter and thicker and had longer twisted wire or hazel handles to absorb the shock of the blows. Hot sets were finer and used for more precise work.
