Illuminated address
Illuminated address awarded to Kate Williams Evans by the Women's Social and Political Union on 16 May 1912 following her imprisonment at Holloway in March/April 1912. Signed by E. Pankhurst, and with the dates of Kate's incarceration (5 March-29 April 1912) handwritten.
These addresses were first issued to suffragettes released from prison in September 1908. They were designed by Sylvia Pankhurst incorporating the "Angel of Mercy" design also used on other WSPU artefacts. Originally accompanied by a prison brooch, as mentioned in the accompanying note (F2018.25.2).
Kate Williams Evans, born in Montgomeryshire in 1866, was sentenced to two months hard labour for malicious damage, having smashed a window in a government building. She served 54 days in Holloway Prison, during which she went on hunger strike.
