Rushlight & candle holder
A table rushlight holder in wrought iron on tripod base, with a plain rolled candle socket. Manufactured by Isaac-y-Gof, Pompren Geifr, Tal-y-bont, Cardiganshire, about 1850-1880. Isaac Jones (1830-1896) was known as 'Isaac-y-Gof'. He was an apprentice or journeyman in Aberystwyth, Cardiganshire, from 1852/3, and was working in Tal-y-bont about 1860-1880. It would have taken a blacksmith approximately 1¼ hours to make. Those destined for a wooden base would take half that time. Twistwork and other decorations would take longer, as would any carving or turning of the wooden base.
Blacksmiths made items for the home and although for everyday use, the objects were often beautiful and decorative. Blacksmiths added extra flourishes to show off their skills.
