Roman pottery cup
The external surface is covered with a slightly patchy black colour-coat. Where it has been worn or applied thinly it appears light brown to orange in colour. In its best condition it has a metallic sheen. Internally the colour-coat is much thinner and appears orange to chestnut brown. It clearly lies in the rilling marks. The sample has been decorated with a thick en-barbotine design, possibly of plant origin. This is applied beneath the colour-coat. Rilling marks indicate it was wheel thrown.
