Welsh costume apron

Black wool apron; tabby woven ground weave with pattern wefts of white stripes running horizontally. Along the sides, there are also 12 white warps resulting in vertical stripes. Apron uses full width of the woven fabric with selvages on either side. Apron is tightly gathered into a black cotton twill waisband which extends into ties on either side. Along the lower edge of the apron, there are four stitched tucks. On the proper left, the tie is short and the end is stitched to itself. On the proper right, the tie is longer but has been extended by joining on a length of tabby woven synthetic tape. The synthetic tape has a knot down its length.

Women in rural Wales wore traditional Welsh costume on a daily basis, not just for special occasions. Different areas had their own styles and patterns. The image of the traditional Welsh lady in a red cloak and tall black hat evolved from the clothing worn by these rural women.
