Still life with a snake, frogs, tortoise and a lizard
PORPORA, Paolo (1617-1673)
Born and trained in Naples, Porpora spent the years 1656-58 in Rome where he encountered the work of Dutch flower painters. The founder of the Neopolitan school of still life painting, he was nicknamed 'Paolo dei Fiori' (of the flowers). This combination combines a passionate interest in natural history with a sense of the macabre peculiar to South Italian art.
