Walking stick
Hazel stick with crop handle; handle ends in a twig which intertwines with stem and is fixed c.3/4 down stem with a nail and copper wire; tin ferrule with brass tip.
Everyday objects become works of art in the hands of a wood carver. Craftspeople can see designs in the way wood has grown, and use their carving skills to bring them to life. In the past, carved sticks were given to people as a token of appreciation. Some sticks reflect particular interests or a particular activity. Stickmaking was a hobby craft rather than a means of earning a living.
