Chair
During the 1870s and 1880s the Eisteddfod commissioned the bardic chair through a competition in the Arts and Crafts section. In the Liverpool Eisteddfod of 1884, the Cymmrodorion Society sponsored the contest with a £15 prize which was awarded to Morris Henry Roberts of Llangollen. His chair is similar to that of 1876, on this occasion featuring a liverbird on the crest and dragon heads on the arms. The four lions of the medieval princes are prominently placed in the back panel surrounded by the Three Feathers, leeks and Mystic Mark. This period was marked by a search for suitable national emblems.
The chair was awarded to Dyfed, Evan Rees (1850-1923).
A copy of the chair was also made and presented to the Liverpool Corporation and became the Mayor's chair in the Council Chambers.
