The original wooden bowl was replaced in silver in the late sixteenth century, suggesting that it was an important heirloom. It belonged to the family of Aberpergwm, important supporters of Welsh poets. Fifteenth-century poet Gwilym Tew praised a bowl of theirs, but this may not be the same bowl.
