Roman ceramic kiln prop
A crude column of fired clay, splayed at one end to form a base and formed into three upward pointing ‘fingers’ at the other. Covered with splatters of green glaze
Roman kiln prop from Holt, Wrexham, 80-250 CE.
The Roman army established kilns on the west bank of the river Dee to supply the Twentieth Legion at Chester. The products were carried to Chester by river. Most of the pottery they produced was oxidized ware, with an orangey-red colour, but they also made some fine green glazed pottery.
