Roman purbeck marble mortar
Rim fragment retaining projecting lug-spout. Interior and top of rim ground smooth; exterior, below base of spout, left roughly pecked. Mortars of this curved profile, with four projecting lugs (one chanelled as a pouring spout) are widespread, occuring typically in contexts of the late first or earlier second centuries, they were used together with stone-elbow pestles . Another Caerleon specimen, unstratified, comes from the Prysg Field.
