Sampler
Woollen canvas, embroidered with coloured silks in cross stitch. At the top is a house flanked on each side by a gate, tree and bird. Alongside is a field containing stag, rabbit, dog and sheep. Below, within compartments of wavy floral stems, are the following inscriptions: 'The hour is come i will not stay / But haste to school without delay / Nor loiter here for tis a crime / To trifle thus with Precious time / Sarah, Lewis. Work / Aged. 14. Years / December. 2. 1835'. The space around and between the inscriptions is filled with detached designs, including lions, cupids, a temple, and flowering plants, symmetrically arranged. There is a border of a floral wavy stem. From Mynydd Islwyn, Monmouthshire. Made by donor's grandmother.
