It is possible that your painting might be the pair to this one. These type of portraits were often painted in pairs, one showing the ship in a calm sea and one in a stormy sea.

The Penzance was an iron steamer of 1456 gross tons, fitted with a compound steam engine and completed by Schlesinger Davis of Wallsend-on-Tyne in 1879 for Short & Dunn of Cardiff. In 1892 she was sold to W.J. Tillett & Co. of Cardiff. She was lost by collision in Barry Roads on 25th October 1902, outward bound for Brest with coal.

Hi there Graham, I will pass your message on to our Curator, and let you know.

I have a painting of this vessel by the same artist. Mine shows the ship in a storm. I believe my great grandfather was its Chief Engineer. Can you tell me anything more about the vessel. I know it sank after a collision in Barry Roads in 1902.
