The steam trawler Hirose was built in 1921 by Cook, Welton and Gemmel of Beverley for Neale and West of Cardiff. Established in 1885, this was Cardiff’s only trawling company, and J.J. Neale’s associations with Japanese trawler owners led to the vessels being given Japanese names. The Hirose was sold to Pettit and Youds of Milford Haven in 1929.

Thank you John for your very interesting comment on the background to why some Neale and West trawlers were given Japanese names. As well as this painting of the HIROSE (which is currently on display at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea) we also have the ship
John Roodhouse.

HI. The reason most of neale and west trawlers were
given japanese names follows.
In the first part nineteen hundreds the japanese warship
MIKASA came into cardiff docks, the navel officers where
guests at neales house in penarth they signed the visitor book, there were three in all,and there names where added to three of there trawlers they had such good luck with them it became practice to continue.
Kind regards.John.
