Jones was a native of Afonwen, Gwynedd, and was a shipowner in Porthmadog before moving to Cardiffin 1865. By 1880 he was the owner of three substantial barques, including the Glaslyn. The Glaslyn was lost in 1865, but Jones went on to acquire steamships. The company ceased operations in 1924.

Dear Michael Pearson,
All we can find is reference to a Jakob Meyer, working in northern Germany in the 1840s, which may not really help! We could maybe find out more information if you were to send an image of the painting, however this might well be a reproduction as it originated from China.
