Clearing the DJ decks and celebrating the best of Welsh Hip-hop

Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales wants your hip-hop items for a new exhibition

Do you have any magazines, flyers or photos from the hip-hop scene in Wales?

Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales will be hosting an exhibition celebrating the best of Welsh hip-hop in two of its museums in 2023. The exhibition will cover the rich history of hip-hop in Wales – charting its rebellious roots to its acceptance as part of Wales’ arts and culture scene.

The main exhibition will open at National Museum Cardiff summer 2023, with a smaller exhibition displayed simultaneously at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea in autumn 2023.

Kaptin Barrett, Hip Hop Collecting Co-ordinator for Amgueddfa Cymru said:

“For this exhibition we need your help. We want to hear from anyone and everyone that has been a part of the Welsh Hip-hop scene, even an avid follower. Were you there at the very beginning? We’re looking for flyers, photos and fashion, mixtapes, magazines, and memorabilia that cover the Welsh Hip-hop scene whether it be graffiti, b-boying, beatboxing, DJing or rapping. We also want to hear any of your own memories that stand out.

“We’re interested in every generation but especially what people might have saved from the 80s and early 90s, or maybe even the 70s! Get in touch and submit photographs, films and memories either by email hiphop@museumwales.ac.uk or on social media."

Amgueddfa Cymru belongs to everyone and is here for everyone to use. We are a charity and a family of seven national museums and a collections centre, located across the country. Our aim is to inspire everyone through Wales’ story, at our museums, in communities and digitally.

Our welcome is free thanks to funding from the Welsh Government and extends to people from all communities.

Play your part in Wales’ story: by visiting, volunteering, by joining, by donating.
