Amgueddfa Cymru partners with Glamorgan Brewing Co. to supply the beer for The Vulcan Hotel
Date:
2023-11-30Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales has appointed Glamorgan Brewing Company as the brewery for The Vulcan Hotel when it opens at St Fagans National Museum of History in 2024.
Following a competitive tender process, the Llantrisant-based Glamorgan Brewing Company have been selected to provide a range of bespoke beers for the re-erected pub.
The Vulcan was built on Adam Street in Cardiff in 1853 to serve the mainly Irish community of what was then called Newtown. During its long history it saw major changes as Cardiff grew to become an industrial powerhouse and then the nation’s capital, finally closing its doors for the last time in 2012.
Following a heartfelt campaign to save it from demolition, the owners of The Vulcan Hotel formally offered the building to the Museum in 2012. Amgueddfa Cymru’s historic building team then dismantled the famous Cardiff landmark brick by brick before moving it to St Fagans.
When the historic pub reopens in 2024, The Vulcan will be displayed as it was in 1915, an important year for the pub. At this time, it had just undergone a major refurbishment that saw its distinctive green and brown tiles added to the frontage, as well as a redesign of its interior.
Glamorgan Brewing Co. are an award-winning, family-owned brewery and wholesaler based in Llantrisant, South Wales. They started their journey in 1994 with a mission to bring better beer to the pubs, clubs, bars and people of Wales. They brew classic styles with a Welsh accent, taking inspiration from local history and Welsh culture. Amgueddfa Cymru’s partnership with the brewery extends Glamorgan Brewing Co.’s growing reach across Wales’ cultural institutions, having already established themselves as a proud partner of the Wales Millennium Centre.
For the first time in over a decade The Vulcan will open its doors and will be selling beers brewed less than 10 miles from its new home at St Fagans National Museum of History. This new venture supports Amgueddfa Cymru’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and to championing local, quality, Welsh produce across its cafes, restaurants and retail stores.
Emily Kneale, Group Food and Beverage Manager for Amgueddfa Cymru said:
“The Vulcan Hotel is a hugely exciting project and we’re working hard behind the scenes to take The Vulcan back in time to 1915. The appointment of Glamorgan Brewing Co. is a big step towards the iconic building reopening at St Fagans.”
“We are pleased to be working with a locally based business in developing the range of Welsh beers that visitors will be able to enjoy in The Vulcan.”
Chris Lloyd, Head of Sales at Glamorgan Brewing Company said:
“Glamorgan Brewing Co. are delighted to be partnering with Amgueddfa Cymru on the eagerly awaited opening of The Vulcan Hotel. We look forward to developing some beers in readiness for pouring the first pint next year. We can’t wait to see how well the beers are received, as The Vulcan will no doubt be a great addition to St Fagans National Museum of History.”
As a charity Amgueddfa Cymru relies on the generosity of the people and visitors of Wales to help us protect, preserve and portray the story of Wales for generations to come.
The project of re-erecting The Vulcan has received financial support from the Simon Gibson Charitable Trust, The Swire Charitable Trust and The Radcliffe Trust, helping to fund the construction, skills training and participatory elements of the project.
However, Amgueddfa Cymru are still appealing for donations to help bring an important part of Cardiff’s history back to life at St Fagans. To donate, please go to
