New Sea Horizons exhibition opens at Oriel y Parc

A striking new exhibition, Môrwelion / The Sea Horizons, opens at Oriel y Parc, National Park Discovery Centre on Saturday 12 July, presenting the work of acclaimed British artist Garry Fabian Miller.

Drawing on over four decades of deep observation, Fabian Miller’s images examine our enduring fascination with the horizon – the meeting point of land, sea, and imagination.

The exhibition is presented in partnership with Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales and spans the full arc of Fabian Miller’s artistic journey, from his 1970s Sea Horizon photographs, captured from his Clevedon rooftop, to his later cameraless works, created in the darkroom using light, glass, water and plants to produce abstract, luminous images inspired by the sea and sky.

Divided between two gallery spaces, Môrwelion / The Sea Horizons invites visitors to experience the evolving moods and mysteries of the horizon – moving from observation to imagination, and from the tangible coastline to more abstract realms.

To mark the opening, Oriel y Parc will host a special event from 11am on Saturday 12 July. The event will include an artist talk at midday, with Garry Fabian Miller in conversation with Dr Bronwen Colquhoun, Photography Curator at Amgueddfa Cymru. Together they will discuss the creative process, the power of landscape, and the enduring significance of the horizon in art and life.

Rachel Perkins, Manager at Oriel y Parc, said: “Garry Fabian Miller’s work captures something essential about our relationship with the coast – its power to inspire, to calm, and to connect us with something greater. We’re delighted to bring Môrwelion / The Sea Horizons to Oriel y Parc and share these extraordinary images with our visitors.”

Garry Fabian Miller said: "I’m fortunate that my earliest work as an artist, The Sea Horizon/Môrwelion, made in 1976/7 when l was 19 found it’s natural home in the collection of Amgueddfa Cymru in 2023, nearly 50 years later. I’m pleased that it is now being shown in conversation with my imagined Dark Room meditations on the horizon.

This is happening in the far west of Wales, which like my home on Dartmoor others think of as distant edge-places. However, l think they are the true centre of the world where meaning and purpose may be found. Here art should roam wild and free, available to everyone. Oriel y Parc allows this opportunity to happen and I’m pleased to be exhibiting in such an unusual and precious place."

The exhibition runs until spring 2026. Admission is free.
