Jasmine Violet

Aberystwyth Arts Centre and National Slate Museum

BIO

Jasmine started her artistic journey in the vibrant Welsh art scene after graduating from art school in 2020. Since then, while also pursuing a PhD at Aberystwyth University’s School of Art, she has been involved in various collaborative projects like Perspective(s) with her work exhibited nationwide. Jasmine is influenced by the complexities of psyche, identity, and subconscious thought, exploring themes of mental health and her identity as a Black woman within both Welsh and British culture. As an interdisciplinary artist, her creative repertoire includes everything from Polaroid photography to experimental cyanotype printmaking and oil painting.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

'Multiplicity’ Project will focus on the importance of People of Colour to the Welsh community and the impact diversity has had on Wales by engaging with communities to explore the visual arts and heritage sector through an anti-racist and decolonial lens, through talks and workshops. 'Sugar Coated' is a dance and movement-based performance in reaction to the knowledge and hidden truths of Wales and its slate industries connection to the Transatlantic slave trade and involves Jasmine deconstructing busts made of sticky, glow-in-the-dark sugar.

QUOTE

“I got involved in the Perspective(s) Programme because it represents a vital step towards supporting marginalised artists and communities in Wales, and opens up essential dialogues around decolonisation, allowing diverse voices and experiences to be represented and celebrated. I hope to help create lasting projects that genuinely support communities, creating a more honest and inclusive environment for everyone in Wales.”
